Freed from the 1500-ton per ship limitations, the Sims class ended up badly overweight in its original incarnation. As a result, like most of its predecessors the original 5-gun battery was reduced to 4 just to accommodate a pair of twin Bofors mounts, as well as the addition of depth charge weaponry. The original torpedo battery was to have been 3 mounts as in the Mahan, but the third mount was ommitted to save weight (the extra mounts were later used on the Atlanta-class cruisers.) |
