This upgrade to the Fletcher class was designed to carry the 5-inch twin gun mount which was beginning to see use on cruisers and battleships, allowing an increase in main battery armament and an increase in available centerline space. Unfortunately, the class became a victim of all this extra space and was badly overweight, resulting in poor range and
handling characteristics. In fact, the follow-on Gearing class had essentially the same armament on a longer hull to improve the situation.
